Best time to visit Melbourne

Melbourne sits in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed from Europe and North America: summer runs December–February and winter June–August. Compare every month by weather, day-trip conditions, crowds, hotel prices and key events to pick what fits you best.

Season overview

Sweet spot: Autumn (March–May)

Mild days, cool nights, autumn colour in the Dandenongs and Yarra Valley, and Melbourne's most stable weather. Widely considered the best season to visit — plus the Formula 1 Grand Prix and Moomba Festival in March.

Summer (December–February): hot spikes, big events

Warm to hot, with sudden 35–40 °C northerly days followed by a rapid cool change — pack layers even in January. The Australian Open, beach weather and long daylight hours make it popular, so expect the year's highest prices and crowds.

Winter (June–August): cold, wet, cheap

Melbourne's coldest, wettest season, but also its cheapest and quietest — ideal for laneway cafés, museums, the NGV and AFL football, with whale-watching starting near Warrnambool.

Spring (September–November): green and eventful

Warming fast with wildflowers, blossoms and the Spring Racing Carnival, plus the AFL Grand Final (September) and Melbourne Cup (November) — two of the city's biggest single days, each with its own price and crowd spike.
